Resumen:
Around the eighteenth-hundreds in the Basque country, intense interaction took place between erudite culture, centred on the apologist Basque and Enlightenment ideologies, and traditional culture. Within this atmosphere a process of "invention of tradition" evolved from which the myth of the"honesty" of the Basque dance was born. This myth was adopted as the authentic factor of identity by the Romantic and nationalistic Basque ideologists; this form of identification still seems prevalent among some today.
